Autonomous and Uncrewed Systems

term

ɔˈtɑnəməs ænd ʌnˈkrud ˈsɪstəmz

Definition

Autonomous and Uncrewed Systems (AUS) are aircraft, vehicles, vessels, robots, and other systems that operate without an onboard human crew and can perform tasks autonomously or with remote human intervention.  These systems integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and sensors to navigate, make decisions, and execute complex missions in real-world settings.

AUS operate across multiple spatial layers:

  • Air: Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, that fly without a pilot onboard.
  • Land: Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs), such as autonomous cars and robotic platforms that navigate terrestrial environments.
  • Water: Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) and Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) that operate on or below the water’s surface.
  • Leveraging space technologies: AUS often use space-based technologies, such as satellite communications and remote sensing data, to boost their capabilities.
